Earliest Gospel of Mark manuscript fragment discovered June 1, by Jordan Trumble Last week, the Oxford-based Egypt Exploration Society published the most recent volume of their Oxyrhynchus Papyri series, making public a papyrus fragment of the Gospel of Mark dating from the late second or early third century AD, the earliest known fragment of that book. While the news of the fragment, called P , carries some disappointment for scholars who hoped it was an earlier artifact, it is still a major discovery.
The fact that the text presents us with no new variants is partially a reflection of the overall stability of the New Testament text over time. The collection, held at the University of Oxford, includes fragments of biblical texts, tax receipts, and a variety of other non-biblical writings and only a small portion of the collection has been published at this time. The years of rumors surrounding the fragment have also raised questions about who has held it, who has accessed it, and if it was ever for sale.
Naturally, other scholars wanted to see the text, but Wallace was unable to comment further, stating shortly after the debate that he had signed a non-disclosure agreement. Over the following years other evangelical scholars would occasionally mention this text, always with the first-century date and almost always with the caveat that they too were unable to discuss it further.
At one point it was suggested by the scholar Craig Evans, again in the context of an evangelical conference, that the papyrus had been extracted from the cartonnage papier-mache filling of an ancient Egyptian funerary mask. This claim was eventually walked back, and many scholars, in the evangelical community and beyond, came to believe that either the first-century Mark was grossly misdated or, perhaps, did not really exist at all.
Despite being an exciting discovery for Biblical scholars, many are even more eager to learn further details about the history of P and hope the Egypt Exploration Society will be forthcoming with more information about the fragment, who has accessed the fragment, and how that access was obtained. For information on these points, we can merely refer our readers to the books themselves; but now, to the extracts already made, we shall add, as being a matter of primary importance, a tradition regarding Mark who wrote the Gospel, which he [Papias] has given in the following words: Mark having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered. It was not, however, in exact order that he related the sayings or deeds of Christ.
For he neither heard the Lord nor accompanied Him. But afterwards, as I said, he accompanied Peter, who accommodated his instructions to the necessities [of his hearers], but with no intention of giving a regular narrative of the Lord’s sayings. Wherefore Mark made no mistake in thus writing some things as he remembered them. For of one thing he took especial care, not to omit anything he had heard, and not to put anything fictitious into the statements.
Irenaeus wrote Against Heresies 3. However, there are two other pieces of external evidence that may confirm that the author of the Gospel of Mark was a disciple of Peter. Justin Martyr quotes from Mark as being the memoirs of Peter Dial. Thus, the tradition of Markan authorship is to be taken seriously. Nevertheless, even though the author may have been a disciple of Peter at some point, the author of the Gospel of Mark needn’t have limited himself to Peter’s preaching for his material.
The Early Date of Mark’s Gospel
Author Scholars and the Gospels There are basically two kinds of scholars: The “scholars’ scholar,” who concentrates on very advanced levels of research that other scholars understand, and the “laymen’s scholar,” who focuses on scholarly matters of a less intense nature that the average layperson understands.
There are biblical scholars in each category.
The Gospel of Mark is anonymous. Early tradition commencing with Papias of Hierapolis links it to John Mark, a companion and interpreter of the apostle Peter, and hence its author is often called Mark, but most scholars are content to identify the author of Mark’s gospel as an unknown first-century Christian.
Though for much of Christian history the gospel of Matthew has been given primacy that honour actually belongs to the gospel of Mark, the shortest and least sophisticated of the Jesus stories. Mark’s literary creation was the starting point for both Matthew and Luke. Contrariwise, where Matthew and Luke differ most from each other — in the nativity and resurrection episodes — it is in material not found and not copied from Mark. Thus, to understand the trajectory by which the Jesus tale developed from an original hero — a righteous man infused by God’s holy spirit— through a hybrid godman possessing powers, to find final form as God incarnate on earth, one is best advised to begin with Mark’s pithy masterpiece.
The expectation was thus of someone in the imminent future, no doubt of ‘Davidic’ or even ‘divine’ lineage but otherwise, human. Respectively, these three conflicts: Judaism itself was against the wall. The weakness of its position had been exposed.

My thinking is that there are some evidences or characteristics that lean toward possibility of first century. First of all is to compare its style — wisdom sayings — to the hypothetical Q gospel, which is also wisdom sayings. The quasi-biographical Synoptic Gospels, in contrast, are definitely more complex writings and also are expressive of greater complexity as to motive and purpose in reflecting the goals of respective authors.
Because of the reference to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE (Mark ), most scholars believe that the Gospel of Mark was written some time during the war between Rome and the Jews (). Most early dates fall around 65 CE and most late dates fall around 75 CE. Early Dating.
When was the Gospel of Mark written? There is a high degree of scholarly consensus that the Gospel of Mark was written in the 60s. Generally, efforts to date Mark rely heavily on analyzing Mark 13 which contains predictions of travails that will come in the future in light of then-current events to date the entire text. Scholars think that one of two events might have been the special focus of the Gospel and therefore help us date Mark: In this context, the Gospel of Mark is seen as an aid to understanding the role of suffering and martyrdom in Christian life, with not only Mark 13 but also passages such as Mark 8: If the author is John Mark, then according to 1 Peter 5: The second event to which Mark 13 is linked is the Jewish War of CE,  which included the destruction of the Temple.
Scholars point to several ties between the Gospel and the setting of the Jewish War. So perhaps Mark was composed near Palestine, at the time of the Jewish War, perhaps in Syria, then a Roman province and a mostly Gentile area. As one scholar describes the situation: Christians were no longer associated with a religion of long standing which at least officially was not prohibited or banned by Roman law.
Unfortunately, neither date is without problems. If we assume that Jesus was speaking prophetically, Mark 13 could be addressing the circumstances of 64CE or 70CE, but could have been spoken in 30CE and written down any time thereafter. And there are additional problems with this approach as well:

Because of the historical allusions found in the Gospel of Mark to the events of the First Jewish Revolt, the period of five years between 70 and 75 CE is the most plausible dating for the Gospel of Mark within the broader timeframe indicated of 65 to 80 CE.

2. Dating the Gospel of Mark
Throughout most of antiquity it was disparaged by commentators, who held that it was merely a condensed version of Matthew. Not until the development of modern critical New Testament scholarship was the importance of Mark recognized. The text of the Gospel of Mark is not impressive on its face. The Greek is often appears awkward and was smoothed out by later writers who used Mark as a source text.
Events occur without apparent reason, in fulfillment of a design not clearly expressed in the text.
