Arts and Culture Violence, vandalism, drink and drug taking at the Lisdoonvarna Music Festival leave some locals opposed to any future event. Locals in Lisdoonvarna and Doolin are not happy about how the festival, now in its sixth year, has gone and many are looking for an end to the event altogether. There is growing opposition to the future of the festival following disturbances on the streets which many locals believe was caused by a lack of policing over the August Bank Holiday weekend. According to one woman, the people of the town have voted and do not want the festival to be held there ever again.
The town voted for never ever allowing the festival to be held in or near Lisdoonvarna again. The majority of people that come to Lisdoonvarna during the festival do not come for the music, do not contribute to the local economy, and are just there to drink and take drugs.

The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival has it all: Parents would bring their children together at social gatherings, sporting events and musical evenings — and all being well, courtships would blossom. The opening of the West Clare Railway in meant Lisdoonvarna increased in popularity as a tourist destination and the matchmaking tradition grew.
Clare’s Senior Hurlers will launch this year’s Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival – as part of a ‘Club Clare’ fundraising event at the Hydro Hotel. Fans will have the opportunity to meet and have their picture taken with the Clare Senior Hurling team on Friday 31st August.
The day itself may be called either Laa Luanistyn or Laa Luanys. It was similar to the Ancient Olympic Games and included ritual athletic and sporting contests, horse racing , music and storytelling, trading, proclaiming laws and settling legal disputes, drawing-up contracts, and matchmaking. Carman is also believed to have been a goddess, perhaps one with a similar tale as Tailtiu. She concluded that the evidence testified to the existence of an ancient festival around 1 August that involved the following: Pilgrims climbing Croagh Patrick on “Reek Sunday”.
It is believed that climbing hills and mountains was a big part of the festival since ancient times, and the “Reek Sunday” pilgrimage is likely a continuation of this. Finally, a ceremony indicating that the interregnum was over, and the chief god in his right place again. One god — usually called Crom Dubh — has generated the growth of the crops and guards this as his ‘treasure’.
The other god — Lugh — must seize it for mankind. Having won the harvest, Lugh then fights and defeats a figure representing blight. Crom Dubh is likely the same figure as Crom Cruach and may be a later version of the Dagda. Many of Ireland’s prominent mountains and hills were climbed at Lughnasadh. Some of the treks were eventually re-cast as Christian pilgrimages, the most well-known being Reek Sunday —the yearly pilgrimage to the top of Croagh Patrick in late July.
In Ireland, bilberries were gathered  and there was eating, drinking, dancing, folk music, games and matchmaking, as well as athletic and sporting contests such as weight-throwing , hurling and horse racing.

Lisdoonvarna is a spa town in north County Clare on the road from Ennistymon to Ballyvaughan. It is famous for its September festival; Europes biggest singles matchmaking festival. The festival runs for the full month of September and there is live music and dancing in all the pubs and hotels day and night. Local match-maker Willie Daly a fourth generation matchmaker is on hand daily.

Muckross House lies on the shores of the lake and is a major tourist attraction and looks spectacular when on one of the surrounding mountains peering down.
